Group Leader

Dr. Francisco Rivero, MD PhD

Reader in Biomedical Science

After completing his studies of Medicine at the University of Valladolid (Spain), Francisco Rivero obtained his PhD from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid (Spain) in 1994 with a thesis that investigated the effect of insulin and nutrients on the regulation of insulin-like growth factor. He then completed postdoctoral studies in Germany at the Max-Planck Institute for Biochemistry, Martinsried (1994-1997) and at the University of Cologne (1997-1998), where he investigated the roles of the actin cytoskeleton using mainly the lower eukaryote model Dictyostelium discoideum. In 1998 he was appointed independent group leader at the Center for Biochemistry of the Medical Faculty, University of Cologne, where he extended his studies to signaling by Rho GTPases and incorporated mammalian cell models. In 2007 he joined HYMS as a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science and was promoted to Reader in 2017.

Over the last 25 years Francisco Rivero has focused his scientific interests on topics related to the cytoskeleton and the signaling pathways that regulate its dynamics, in particular those that involve small GTPases of the Rho family. In the last few years his laboratory has started to elucidate the role of the actin cytoskeleton and the signalling pathways that regulate it in blood platelets.
